Das Amt für Umwelt und Energie Basel-Stadt startete im Mai 2021 die Kampagne «Basel isst abfallfrei». Ziel ist es, die Konsumentinnen und Konsumenten davon zu überzeugen, dass sie eine Menge Abfall vermeiden können, wenn sie ihr Essen in einem mitgebrachten Behälter beziehen ‒ oder im Mehrweggeschirr, das vielerorts gegen Depot erhältlich ist. Gleichzeitig werden alle Betriebe mit Take-away-Angebot angesprochen. Sie können gleich mehrfach profitieren: Einerseits sparen sie Geld, weil ihre Verpackungs- und Entsorgungskosten sinken, andererseits können sie umweltbewusste Kunden hinzugewinnen.
