Standards sind die Alternative zu individuellen Schnittstellensprachen. IHE (Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise) ist eine Initiative von Fachleuten des Gesundheitswesens mit dem Ziel die Kommunikation zwischen verschiedenen IT-Systemen und Medizingeräten zu verbessern. IHE fördert den Einsatz von etablierten internationalen Standards wie DICOM und HL7 zur Optimierung der Prozesse innerhalb eines Krankenhauses, einer Praxis oder auch zwischen den Gesundheitseinrichtungen. Dabei setzt IHE auf die Zusammenarbeit von Anwendern, Implementierern und Entwicklern. Das Ergebnis sind ein umfangreiches technisches Rahmenwerk als Implementierungsleitfaden sowie eine Reihe von Testtools für die Anwender und Hersteller. Mit dem jährlichen Connectathon, an dem bis zu 300 Entwickler mit über 120 Systemen teilnehmen, werden Systeme auf Kompatibilität getestet und somit sichergestellt, dass sie fehlerfrei miteinander kommunizieren können und für den Praxiseinsatz vorbereitet sind. Systeme, die auf Grundlage des IHE entwickelt wurden, kommunizieren besser miteinander, sind einfacher umzusetzen und ermöglichen Leistungserbringern, Informationen effektiver zu nutzen. Vision Nahtlosen und sicheren Zugang zu Gesundheitsinformationen aktivieren, wann immer und wo immer nötig. Mission Das Gesundheitswesen zu verbessern und Spezifikationen, Tools und Dienstleistungen für die Interoperabilität anzubieten. Kliniken, Gesundheitsbehörden, Industrie und Nutzer anzuhalten, standard-basierte Lösungen für bestimmte Bedürfnisse des Gesundheitswesens zu entwickeln, zu testen und umzusetzen.
